Surprise

the day after a haircut, i wake up tired and groggy and wanting very much to stay in bed (just like every other morning), but then i remember that there is something special about the day, something is different, something is new. and then i am eager to get up. a new item of clothing sometimes has a similar effect, if i plan to wear it that day. the "oh goody" effect with a good cut lasts about a week. maybe a little more. with clothing, it's about the same. then the item becomes "just" regular. i still enjoy it, but it doesn't give me the "oh goodies."

do you ever get a newness high, and how long does it last?

Good question. I love the newness high!!! Ironically, if it is something that I can wear daily, the newness high lasts longer. If it is something that I only enjoy sporadically, the newness high ends after one week or 2-3 uses, whichever comes first.

I do: I still have it with the bag I carry, which I got a year ago. I have it with new shoes until the leather breaks in, or until the first scuff appears.

coco - that is the problem. *sigh*

martha - i suppose that's true for me as well, if i use the item daily, i enjoy it certainly for more uses than i do something reserved for infrequent occasions.

^^enc, same for me, actually. my purses, i do love them, as though they were new.

YES! The prospect of wearing something new for the first time is one of the very few things that can get me out of bed bright and early... well okay, just not as late as usual. I think the high of the new thing really only lasts for 1-2 wears. Terrible really.

i tend to save new things for big days, precisely for that "fuck, i look cute in this _____ " effect that lasts precisely for only one day/event/moment.

if only there were a reboot button on newness.

for the last month, i've been getting high off of my bona drag leopard print petal top! i just love it. same goes for my michele lau ruffle top, which i've had for a couple of years now. i think voluminous ruffles tend to do that for me -- they make me feel ecstatic and refreshed. it makes me so excited just to talk about these pieces!

(it's not only voluminous ruffles that do it for me...certain other "fierce" or "clean" pieces in my wardrobe also make me thrilled to be alive...)

this prolonged "newness high" isn't just confined to fashion for me...my partner and i have been together for, well, closer to a decade than not...and he and i still get goosebumps and butterflies and nervous tingles all the rest on an almost daily basis! for me, it's about recognizing what i do have and actively appreciating it.

sometimes it wears off, but there are things that will always give me the "oh goody" feeling everytime i wear them.

^^^^ Me neither, I never lose the love for my purses. Especially the vintage ones! Or sometimes, I'll wear shoes I'd boxed up months ago, and forgotten about, and that'll feel "new."

definitely have it!

i guess it depends on the item. right this moment i am wearing a skirt that i still get the "oh goodies" about. (love that, by the way - the "oh goodies"!) i've had this skirt now i think for four months... :-)

i think that as long as i can (and do) wear the item fairly frequently (say, 1x a week) then the high will last for quite a long time. it has in the past lasted long enough that the item has completely worn out (at which point i kick myself for not buying a second of the same piece when i had the chance!).

if i don't start using the item right away, though, it begins to languish in my closet, and i forget about it completely... i think i may be very all-or-nothing in that way, about my likes/dislikes.
