Brace yourself

before you buy it, before you try it on, just as you are approaching it, before you can even look at the price tag, do you do any internal assessment to produce a guestimate of the cost?

in what order are these factors considered (from most to least relevant) in terms of how you anticipate the ballpark for the price?

store, label, cut, fabric

How funny. I totally do this. I'm not sure what factors come into play. I think it's based on the total look of something.

Oh, order...store, label, cut, fabric

I also do this thing where, if there's a magazine feature on, say, bags and there are 12 bags featured on a page, I try to pick my favorite and see if, as is often the case, it's the most expensive.

Because I'm unemployed, and I have lots of time on my hands.

fabric, fabric, fabric, cut, and I have to say stitching.
store.
label. I look at the price tag before the label.

Cut, fabric, store, label.

Done. Interesting but the store and label don't really come into it much anymore. Maybe because I don't really shop in actual stores anymore.

I do this all the time but never thought about how I do it!

I think this is my order:

fabric, label, intricacy of detailing, store

Label, store, fabric, cut. I'm usually wrong by at least $30 in one direction or another. After all these years, you'd think I'd have garnered some skillz.

Editor, I adore your blog with its brain-bending questions. Any chance for a blogroll add? You're already in mine, for what it's worth ...

Sometimes.

Store, label, cut, fabric all factor in for me, but also the department where I find the item is a consideration, if I am in fact in a department store.

The store itself is the biggest consideration for me. I'm ready for the price tags I'll see in each store when I walk in.

sal - thank you!!
the links i have listed currently are for sites that i visit regularly or semi-regularly. many of them i did find originally by tracking poster comments to their original blog and getting hooked, but it takes a while for a blog to become a regular destination - there just aren't enough hours in the day. :)

I always guesstimate the cost, it's part of building my eye and it's a game. I extrapolate the factors you listed as well as shelf life (has it been in the store awhile?) and scarcity, and that happens with the speed of a Cray computer.
