Trespassing

when was the last time you were exposed (through a magazine or some other form) to the aesthetics of a dissimilar group (either a foreign language, different culture, different age group, etc.)?

An interesting question to think about! The thing is, I do not see myself as essentially different from other people based on language, culture or age. I connect on the level of interest, i.e. I see myself as dissimilar from other people in terms of my interests. So though I am exposed on a daily basis to different cultures, languages, and age groups, I do not really take steps to expose myself to interests outside my normal realm. I would never read a sports blog for example. I would not really listen to music outside my usual range of interest (jazz, tango, classical). Not because I think less of other types, but simply because there is so much in my own area of interest that I have not explored yet. And so little time!!

Last night. I watched the Bill Cunningham slide show about low-riding pants and blingy belts. I like him, he always seems very nonjudgmental in his observations, just interested in the different ways people dress themselves.

Just about 10 days ago when I arrived in Europe. To a greater extent than I expected.

Two days ago, when I was reading Mr.OM's Spin, which had just arrived in the mail. The people who play music have a uniform, something I can't picture myself wearing anymore. I used to do it, when I played in college, but not anymore. I'm fascinated by it, but must observe only.

I work on a college campus, so I see fashion from a different age group every day. And yes, I realize this ups my stodge factor, but good GUMDROPS I can't believe what college girls wear these days. And I'm not talking slut-factor, I'm talking slob-factor. Eeeyaa.
